Lebanon's ruling "clique" will not compromise & will oversee the de-facto division of the State

Scheduling the parliamentary elections to replace the two assassinated MPs Gemayel & Eido on August 5th is a clear message to the "opposition" that the ruling "clique" has no intentions for compromise on the formation of a National Unity government, and of cloaking all such moves (elections ...) with constitutionality and legality. Consequently, and if intransigence remains l'ordre du jour, President Lahoud will put in motion the process that will lead to the formation of a "new" government, in this case, a second government, a move that will surely lead the unconstitutional government of Fouad Siniora to hold unconstitutional presidential elections and so on ... and so forth. The ruling "clique" will proceed with the cannibalization of Lebanon's Constitution and will reject all calls for reason as it has scuttled scores of Arab and European mediations and seem bent on implementing Elliot Abrams agenda.

Innocent question: Do you believe that Lahoud's grip on his army has gotten so weak then, and that Sleiman has been so thoroughly bought off that the majority Shi'a army will simply sit this out? I am tempted to doubt this, but then experience has taught me to never doubt en matieres libanaises, neither Mar Cherbel's miracles, nor anything else.

How come Abrams has become so powerful to initiate policies that in the end are detrimental to the United States, notwithstanding Lebanon and Arab countries. One has to question where Abrams' loyalty lays. He is more of an Israeli likudnik than an American patriot. What can you expect from a convicted felon, even if pardoned by Bush senior?

You're right. It's not as simple as it seems, though personally, I tend to doubt when the US (and France for example) speak favorably of Commander Sleiman. As for Mar Charbel has not been himself since he went all out to save May Chidiaq!
